This is the feature length film debut of upstart Japanese animator Makoto Shinkai, who garnered widespread critical acclaim for the 2002 short film VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR, which he wrote, directed, edited, and animated entirely by himself on a Mac computer. Having been released in 16 countries worldwide, VOICES put Shinkai on the map in a big way, and with the feature length PLACE PROMISED set to be released in select US theaters this summer by ADV Films, there seems to be no stopping him. Having already made a major impact in Japanese theaters, the multiple award winning PLACE PROMISED is set to build on this talented director's already shining star. Shinkai's vision of an alternate history, where post World War II Japan is divided between the US and the remaining Japanese government, sets the stage for this science fiction tale about dreams and memories, in a world that looks strikingly familiar but eerily alien at the same time. Three young schoolchildren make a promise to one day find out the purpose of the mysterious giant tower built on the still Japanese-controlled island of Hokkaido, until young Sayuri falls into a coma. Years later, Sayuri's friends renew their vow to keep their promise to her when they discover that their dear friend may have some connection to the mystery of the tower. With beautiful understated backgrounds, and simple but fluid animation, Shinkai takes us back and forth through time, and between the dream world and reality as events unfold in the lives of these three friends. This film is a rarity in the world of anime, on par with the likes of Miyazaki, Oshii, and Otomo in its visual style. In addition to this premiere screening, we are also proud to present Shinkai's animation debut, the critically acclaimed short film VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR, immediately following the premiere. This is a unique chance to see this talented young director's body of work, as we feature his extraordinary talents in true MDS fashion. The Tribeca Grand Hotel Screening Room in Manhattan will be the perfect setting for this unforgettable double feature event, ahead of the summertime theatrical release of PLACE PROMISED.5-4-05 (11:43PM EST)---- Gonzo And Spike Team On Afro Samurai AnimeAcclaimed actor and producer Samuel L.
